The Green Lantern film franchise has been rebooted and greenlit, EW can exclusively reveal.
The film has been given a revamp and will feature the iconic green lanterns.
The casting of the cast, including Bradley Cooper and Elizabeth Olsen, will be announced during the premiere of the film in 2019, and is expected to be released to theaters in 2019.
“We’re very excited to finally be able to share more information on this exciting new Green Lantern adventure,” said Zack Snyder, writer/director of The Batman and the Green Lantern.
“This is one of the most celebrated films in comic history, and the story we’ve been telling for the last nine years has been something we’ve wanted to tell for a very long time.
Now, we finally can.”
The reboot will be set in the near future where the world has been turned into a “garden.”
Green Lantern will take place in an alternate timeline where the DC Universe is at war with the Green Arrow Corps, and a future where Hal Jordan, the Green Ring, and their allies are the true Green Lanterns.
In the film, Green Lantern (Barry Allen) and Hal Jordan (Olsen) travel back in time to protect the future of their universe from a threat that will change the history of the entire world.
The plotline was first revealed at Comic-Con International: San Diego, which was also a big day for the Green Universe.
The original story involved a group of rogue members of the DCU who had created the Green Rings to stop the Earth from becoming destroyed by the Darkseid-led Lantern Corps, a threat the team is still facing.
Green Lantern had been a mainstay of DC comics for more than 30 years, but the franchise has seen its share of rebooted productions.
The last one to be rebooted was Man of Steel, which rebooted the series in 2015.
The series will see the Green Corps reunite with Hal Jordan and the rest of the Green Riders, who were the original Green Lantern Corps members.
However, a long time ago, the corps was wiped out by the threat of an unknown entity.
This threat was later revealed to be the “Darkseid threat,” who was a villain of the Dark Universe.
Now that the threat has been neutralized, the Corps will be reunited with the Lanterns and their world will be in the hands of a new generation of heroes, led by the Green Green Lantern, Green Ring.
The character will be played by Cooper.
In a similar way to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Greenman, the main villain of Green Corps, will also be back in the film.
The story takes place in 2020 in the fictional New Gotham City, where the Green League of Superheroes have defeated the Green King, the first of the new Green Rings.
However the battle did not end there, as Green Lantern and his allies were then faced with the new threat of the “King of the Ring.”
This was revealed to have been the threat from the Green Earths, who sought to take over the world.
This led to a war between the Green and the Dark Lanterns, and was the source of the war that has ravaged the world since then.
Cooper will reprise his role as Hal Jordan.
“I’m excited to return to the Green Team with Bradley Cooper in the role of Hal Jordan,” said Snyder.
“The history of Hal and his Green Lantern teammates is one that will be incredibly familiar to fans.
We’re looking forward to making Green Lantern the most beloved superhero franchise of all time, and bringing the character to life in the world we all love and care about.”
Cooper, who recently wrapped filming on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, will play Captain Boomerang, the captain of the Blue Lantern Corps.
He will join a team of Blue Lanterns that includes Black Canary (Giancarlo Esposito), Kid Flash (David Ramsey), and Kid Central (Hugh Jackman).
The film will also feature the first appearance of Captain Atom, who is one half of the Atom family.
“Captain Atom will be a truly iconic Green Lantern,” said Warner Bros. TV president Rob Thomas.
“He is the perfect partner to play Hal Jordan for our fans who grew up with Hal’s story, and we are thrilled to have him back for a great installment.”
A few other DC Comics characters will also return, including The Flash (Grant Gustin), Catwoman (Margot Robbie), and Poison Ivy (Elizabeth Olsen).
“The Green Lantern franchise has long been a cornerstone of the CW,” said CW CEO Mark Pedowitz.
“With this franchise coming back to life with a new version of Hal’s origin and team, the entire DC Universe will come to life once again in this thrilling film.”
The Green Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman will also make appearances in the rebooted Green Lantern movie.
